Terms and conditions
This year's European Inventor Award will see one of the 15 shortlisted finalists take home the Popular Prize 2019. Which inventor this honour should go to will be decided solely by a public vote. Voters can find out more about all the nominated inventors and their innovations by viewing their profiles (text, images and videos) on the website of the European Patent Office (EPO) www.epo.org.
1. Voting and entry for prize draw
Votes in the Popular Prize category can be cast online on the dedicated EPO website popular-prize.epo.org from 7 May 2019, 10.00 hrs CET to 23.59 hrs CET on 16 June 2019.
Participants can vote once a day for as many of the 15 shortlisted finalists. However, only one vote per day can be cast for the same inventor. Voting is free of charge.
When participants vote for the first time, they will be asked to confirm that the details entered are correct by clicking a link sent by email. This is necessary to complete the process and submit a valid vote.
The votes will be counted on 17 June 2019 and the winner announced at the European Inventor Award ceremony in Vienna on 20 June 2019.
When participants cast their vote, they can also opt to be entered for a prize draw. By opting to be entered for the prize draw, they also agree to being named on www.epo.org and popular-prize.epo.org and on the EPO's Facebook page if they are among the winners drawn.
If participants subsequently decide to withdraw from the prize draw, they can notify the EPO of this at any time by:
(a) sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org (please state first name, surname and email address) or
(b) clicking the "Remove your information" link in the email sent to confirm your vote.
The vote in the Popular Prize category of the European Inventor Award 2019 and the prize draw for voters are organised by the EPO in its capacity as a body of the European Patent Organisation with its headquarters in Munich.
To be eligible to vote, participants must be aged 18 or over at the time of voting. They need to enter their first name, surname and email address in the boxes provided and consent to these terms and conditions. If participants would like to be entered for the prize draw, they can indicate this separately by selecting that option on the website.
EPO staff and their families (spouses, partners and other adult relatives) are eligible to vote, but cannot enter the prize draw.
Any person involved in organising and running the vote or the prize draw is disqualified from both voting and entry for the draw, as are members of their family.
The EPO also reserves the right to decide at its discretion to disqualify any person from voting or entering the prize draw if there is good reason to do so, e.g. where that person:
- is suspected of manipulating the vote or the draw (e.g. by repeat voting by automated means)
- has breached these terms and conditions
- has provided false or misleading information for the purposes of voting or entering the draw.
Any person using multiple email addresses or automated voting tools to cast votes will be disqualified from the prize draw. If it is discovered only after that person has been drawn as a winner that their vote was invalid, the prize will be withheld or reclaimed from them.
The EPO cannot be held liable for any technical difficulties or outages encountered on the voting or prize-draw platforms. Nor can it be held liable any for damage, costs or other expenses directly or indirectly incurred in voting or entering the prize draw.
3. Prize draw: result, prizes, notification and receipt
Voting in the Popular Prize category gives participants the opportunity to enter a prize draw for one of ten evaLIGHT - personal air conditioners. The prizes are not redeemable for cash. The EPO cannot be held liable if the air conditioners do not work properly.
Casting multiple votes for the Popular Prize on different days gives participants multiple entries in the prize draw.
The 15 prize winners will be drawn at random on 24 June 2019. Anyone participating in the prize draw can win a maximum of one air conditioner. If a person who voted on two or more different days and opted to enter the prize draw each day is drawn as a winner a second or multiple times, the draw will be repeated until a different winner has been drawn.
The EPO will contact the winners within seven working days of the draw by writing to the email address they provided when voting.
The EPO will make three attempts to contact each winner but, if there has been no response within seven working days of its third attempt, a replacement winner will be drawn at random.
The result of the prize draw is final and cannot be contested in court.
4. Early close of voting or prize draw
The EPO expressly reserves the right to close both voting and prize-draw entry early without prior notice and without giving reasons. In particular, it may decide to do so if it has reason to suspect interference with the outcome of the vote, e.g. in the form of votes cast by automated means.
5. Social media
The EPO uses Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn to provide information about the Popular Prize. However, none of those platform providers is involved in sponsoring, organising or supporting, or otherwise associated with, either the Popular Prize or the voters' prize draw.
6. Applicable law
The EPO-run vote and prize draw are governed by the law of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Should any of these terms and conditions be or become wholly or partially invalid, the remaining clauses will still apply. Instead of the invalid provision, a lawful one that comes closest to achieving its economic object and purpose will be applied. The same will apply by analogy if there is a gap in these terms and conditions.
8. Additional information and contact
Questions about the vote or the prize draw can be sent to the EPO at email@example.com or on Facebook.
